FAQ

When can I fly ?

We are the longest established Lake District operator and provide a weekday evening service in addition to morning and evening flights at the weekend during the main season. This usually extends from April to October.

We do not schedule flights in the close season because of the combination of typically wet and windy weather and frequent sodden ground conditions which mean that we may not be welcome by the farming community on whom we rely for take off and landing sites.

Why do you only fly early in the morning or in the evening?

The air is usually at its most stable at these times of day and any breeze is likely to be more gentle. During the middle of the day, when temperatures rise, thermal activity is generated and we cannot fly because of the safety implications of being unable to steer to avoid thermals. If birds are soaring in a spiral it is unlikely that balloons will be flying.

For your guidance the following approximate meeting times apply throughout the flying season. The specific times vary with sunrise and sunset throughout the year and with the prevailing weather conditions. Exact meeting times will therefore be given to you at the final flight check. Please be aware that failure to attend on time for a booked flight will result in forfeiture of your voucher.

How long will the flight last ?

The flight itself will last approximately one hour. You should allow at least three hours and possibly up to four hours for your adventure, giving time to celebrate your flight with champagne and for the return journey to the meeting point. Your return from a summer evening flight is likely to be after last orders for food in most establishments. A retrieve vehicle and crew will be following the balloon throughout the flight staying in radio contact.

Who can fly ?

Ballooning is a physical activity and is classified as a risk sport but with due consideration almost anyone can participate.

There are no age restrictions on who can fly but certain passengers may need to be accompanied. We do not encourage children under 10 years old (4' 6'' or 1.4m tall) to be included on flights as they cannot see over the basket side.

Passengers should be fit enough to climb in and out of the basket and stand for about an hour. Certain categories of passenger such as children, the elderly and disabled may have to be restricted to very calm conditions. It is necessary to be able to crouch to a 'semi seated' position and to hold this for landing which may also be bumpy.

Pregnant women should not fly and vouchers will be extended free of charge in such circumstances.

If in any doubt please discuss your concerns with our sales staff even if you do not consider there to be a real problem - we will do our best to accommodate all but it is always better to discuss in advance of the flight. This allows us to respond to our Duty of Care for your safety and that of others. Failure to disclose any condition which may affect your safety or the safety of others may result in any insurance cover being invalidated.

Space limitations in the basket mean that for comfort and safety a passenger weight limit of 18 stone (114 kg) has to be imposed.

Wheelchair bound passengers unfortunately cannot be accommodated as our baskets are not certified for the carriage of such passengers.

Can I help ?

You are more than welcome to help if you wish and the pilot and crew will give you instructions. Assisting the balloon to come alive and packing away after the flight are intriguing parts of the adventure but please note that these activities are physically demanding.

What about insurance ?

We believe our clients are reassured that we carry substantial specialist In Flight and Third Party Insurance (£5m) together with Employers and Public Liability cover plus Comprehensive Vehicle Insurances specific to our activities and details can be made available if requested. Insurance cover is included in the voucher price.

We have a claim free history.

What should I wear ?

Comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for the time of year is recommended, preferably made of natural fibres. As the balloon moves with the wind where is no 'chill' factor.

High heeled shoes should not be worn and strong waterproof footwear is advisable.

A hat might be useful to minimise the effect of radiant heat from the burners for taller or follicly challenged passengers!

May I bring a camera ?

The balloon basket provides an excellent stable platform for photography with unrestricted views of the countryside below. Just remember to bring plenty of film along and check your batteries! Please be prepared to store valuables safely on landing.

Do I need a head for heights ?

No. Vertigo seems to be associated with tall buildings, mountains, bridges etc. which are connected to the ground. A balloon does not sway or tilt in flight so you will feel quite secure.

Where can we stay and what else can we do in The Lake District?

There are plenty of suggestions at Places to Eat and Drink when in Lake District for a Balloon Ride, Places to Stay on your Balloon Trip to Cumbria - The Lake District and Things to Do, Places to Visit when in Lake District for a Balloon Flight.
What do I do if my flight is cancelled?

The principal reason for a flight cancellation is a forecast of unsuitable weather conditions which would render it unsafe to fly. Unforeseen operational reasons may also result in cancellation but in both cases we do try to give several hours notice on our information line.

If your flight is cancelled it is simply a case of contacting our Sales Office during normal office hours to reschedule. Don't be afraid to leave a message on the answerphone if your call is not answered personally. We will do our utmost to get you booked on a flight as soon as possible but it is not practical to accept multiple bookings at the outset.

Aerial Safaris ?
